Paediatric physiotherapy

A paediatric physiotherapist is able to assess babies’ and children’s development in terms of movement, posture, physical skills, and co-ordination. They can then provide strategies to assist in these areas.

What does a paediatric physiotherapist do?


A Paediatric Physiotherapist can assess your child and assist in one or more of the following areas:

  • Gross motor assessment: if there are concerns regarding delayed rolling, sitting, crawling or walking.
  • Positional head turn: when your baby cannot turn his/her head properly to each side.
  • Plagiocephaly: assessment and management of mis-shapen head.
  • Co-ordination: walking, running and a child’s body awareness in space.
  • Posture: of the body, spine, hips, knees and feet.
  • Balance: when your child is unsteady and/or unable to control balance relative to children of the same age.

Who is eligible for service?

The eligibility criteria for this service are consistent with the other Doutta Galla Children’s Therapy services:

  • Pre-school aged children only
  • Child is not currently on a waiting list for Early Intervention services
  • Child does not have a diagnosis of Developmental Delay, Autism, Cerebral Palsy or any other physical disability
  • Child and/or family live, work or attend kinder/crèche within the Cities of Moonee Valley and Melbourne.

Who is not eligible?

  • Children who receive more than one level of integration aide funding
  • Children who receive physiotherapy services through Yooralla or Scope school therapy
  • Children who are eligible and/or on the waiting list for early intervention services e.g. Specialists Children’s Services
  • Children with a diagnosis of autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome or any other moderate/severe physical and intellectual disability

Who can refer?

Parents, Pre-school teachers, Doctors, Paediatricians, Maternal Child Health Nurses.

Is there a fee for the service?

There is a fee for the service depending on your family income:

Health Care Card Holders or family income less than $61,000 - no fee
Family income from $61,000 to $103,000 - $14
Family income more than $103,000 - $90

Group programs:
HCC or low income - no fee
All other families - $10
