Connecting Mentors & Mates Program

Doutta Galla's Social Inclusion Program has a need for volunteers for the Connecting Mentors & Mates Program.

The aim of the Connecting Mentors & Mates Program is to reduce social isolation, foster community links and increase social confidence for participants who experience mental health issues.

Mentors meet with clients and share their skills and knowledge for 1-2 hours per week over an 8 week period.

Mates accompany individual clients that they have been matched with to activities/outings in the community. For example: joining a community group such as a walking group; playing a fortnightly game of pool or Scrabble with the participant; attending art exhibitions; going fishing, visiting the local library or simply going for a cup of coffee.

Mentors & Mates receive orientation training before meeting a (matched) client, as well as ongoing support from staff. Orientation training helps the Mentor or Mate to explore the unique ways to support the participant with whom they may be working.

Ongoing training and support is provided. We will undertake a police check prior to placement.

There is no set time limit on the client/Mate connection, however, in respect to the participant and their well-being, it is expected that a Mate will commit to the role for a minimum of six months.
