Patrick has been a Volunteer Communications Assistant at Doutta Galla’s Moonee Ponds and Niddrie sites since March.
Volunteering twice a week benefits Patrick in gaining valuable work experience and allows him to put the knowledge he acquired at university into practice.
Patrick’s tasks include: updating Doutta’s quarterly newsletter, writing media releases, administering the corporate website and building community awareness through assisting in promotional events.
“Every day is different”, Patrick says. “One day I’m assisting in a photo shoot and working on the newsletter; the next I’m working on the website and liaising with suppliers for promotional displays, there’s never a dull moment.”
Patrick explains that the best aspect of volunteering at Doutta Galla is the people.
“The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. They make you feel part of the team and are always happy to help you out. This is especially true of my manager, who is supportive and ensures I am always learning new marketing techniques.”
Although he never previously considered volunteering at a not-for-profit organisation, Patrick does not regret his decision. Rather he encourages others to volunteer.
“You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
